Gideon Summary

Gideon is a small city located in the southeastern corner of Missouri, in the Bootheel region. It is situated in the Mississippi River Delta, and is part of the Sikeston-Miner Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a population of approximately 2,000 people, and is the county seat of New Madrid County.

History

Gideon was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of New Madrid. The town was named after Gideon Smith, a prominent local businessman and landowner. The town was incorporated in 1876, and the first post office was established in 1877.
Gideon was a thriving agricultural community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was home to several cotton gins, a sawmill, and a gristmill. The town also had a number of stores, churches, and other businesses.
In the early 20th century, the town began to decline as the cotton industry declined and the Great Depression hit the area. The town was further impacted by the Great Flood of 1927, which caused extensive damage to the area.
