Clarksville Summary

Clarksville is a small town located in Pike County, Missouri, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 50 miles north of St. Louis. The town was founded in 1819 and named after General George Rogers Clark, a Revolutionary War hero. The population of Clarksville was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Clarksville is located at 39°25'25" North, 90°45'45" West (39.423, -90.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The town is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The town is located in the Ozark Plateau, and is part of the Ozark Mountains.

History

Clarksville was founded in 1819 by General George Rogers Clark, a Revolutionary War hero. The town was named after him, and was the first town in Pike County. The town was originally a trading post, and was a popular stop for travelers and traders.
In the early 1900s, the town began to grow and develop. The first school was built in 1904, and the first bank opened in 1906. The town was incorporated in 1909.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline, as many of the businesses and factories closed. The population decreased, and the town became a quiet, rural community.

Economy

The economy of Clarksville is largely based on agriculture. The town is surrounded by farmland, and many of the residents are involved in farming and ranching. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.7/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 676.7 per square mile (261.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
