Canton Summary

Canton, Missouri is a small city located in Lewis County, in the northeastern part of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, and is the county seat of Lewis County. The city has a population of approximately 2,500 people, and is part of the Quincy, IL-MO Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Canton was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. The city was named after the city of Canton, Ohio, which was the birthplace of one of the settlers. The city was incorporated in 1845, and was the first city in Lewis County to be incorporated.
In the late 19th century, Canton was a major center for the lumber industry, and the city was home to several sawmills and lumber yards. The city also had a thriving brick-making industry, and was home to several brickyards.
In the early 20th century, Canton was a major center for the coal mining industry. The city was home to several coal mines, and the coal industry was a major employer in the city.

Geography

Canton is located in northeastern Missouri, in Lewis County. The city is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, and is located about 25 miles south of Quincy, Illinois. The city has a total area of 1.7 square miles, all of which is land.
