California Summary

California, Missouri is a city located in Moniteau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,278 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Moniteau County.

History

California was founded in 1819 by John Smith, a settler from Kentucky. Smith named the town after the state of California, which had recently been admitted to the Union. The town was incorporated in 1859.
In the late 19th century, California was a major center of the timber industry. The town was home to several sawmills and lumber yards, and the local economy was largely dependent on the timber industry.
In the early 20th century, California was a major center of the tobacco industry. The town was home to several tobacco warehouses and processing plants, and the local economy was largely dependent on the tobacco industry.

Geography

California is located at 38°30′N 92°37′W (38.50, -92.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

California’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural operations, including a large hog farm and a large dairy farm. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large furniture manufacturer and a large plastics manufacturer.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,278 people, 1,717 households, and 1,093 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,937.7 people per square mile (746.7/km2). There were 1,890 housing units at an average density of 854.3 per square mile (330.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
