Benton Summary

Benton is a city located in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Francois County.

History

Benton was founded in 1819 by William Benton, a settler from Kentucky. The town was originally known as Bentonville, but the name was changed to Benton in 1821. The town was incorporated in 1872.
Benton was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1862, when Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant defeated Confederate forces under General Sterling Price. The battle was known as the Battle of Pilot Knob.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Benton's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant.
The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,288.6 people per square mile (496.7/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 531.8 per square mile (205.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 1.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
