History

Franklin was founded in 1820 by William Simpson, a Revolutionary War veteran. The city was named after Benjamin Franklin, a Founding Father of the United States. The city was incorporated in 1837 and has since grown to become the largest city in Simpson County.

Geography

Franklin is located at 36°41'45"N 86°37'45"W (36.695833, -86.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.

Economy

Franklin is a major economic center for the region. The city is home to several large employers, including Franklin-Simpson Industrial Park, which is home to several manufacturing and distribution companies. The city is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,408 people, 3,521 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,023.2 people per square mile (395.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 481.3 per square mile (185.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 9.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 3,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 16.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
