Woolstock Summary

Woolstock is a small city located in Wright County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Dodge, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Woolstock was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Woolstock, England. The town was named after the English town, and the settlers brought with them the same customs and traditions. The first post office was established in 1882.
The town was originally a farming community, but in the early 1900s, the town began to grow and develop. The first bank was established in 1906, and the first school was built in 1908. The town also had a newspaper, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the population moved away to larger cities. The bank closed in 1929, and the newspaper ceased publication in 1932. The hotel closed in the 1940s, and the general store closed in the 1950s.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Woolstock is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, and the surrounding area is used for growing corn, soybeans, and other crops.
The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 145 families residing in the city. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.17.
