Underwood is a city located in Monona County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,068 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Monona County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2), all of it land.

History

Underwood was founded in 1856 by settlers from Ohio and Indiana. The town was named after the Underwood family, who were among the first settlers. The town was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Underwood was a major shipping point for livestock and grain. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a newspaper, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, and a livery stable.

Economy

Underwood is a small rural community with a population of 1,068. The town is home to a variety of businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a restaurant, and a gas station.
The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a metal fabrication plant, a plastics manufacturer, and a woodworking shop.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,068 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,039.2 people per square mile (400.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 459.8 per square mile (177.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.90.
