Titonka Summary

Titonka is a small town located in Kossuth County, Iowa, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Algona Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Titonka was founded in 1882 by a group of settlers from the Netherlands. The town was named after a Native American chief who lived in the area. The first post office was established in 1883.
In the early 1900s, Titonka was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a general store, a blacksmith shop, a creamery, a lumberyard, a hotel, and a bank. The town also had a school, a church, and a newspaper.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as many of the businesses closed. The population decreased from a peak of 645 in 1950 to 517 in 2010.

Geography

Titonka is located at 43°7′17″N 94°17′17″W (43.1214, -94.2881). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Titonka's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 517 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 862.5 people per square mile (333.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
