Stratford Summary

Stratford is a city located in Hamilton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hamilton County. Stratford is located in the heart of Iowa's agricultural region, and is known for its strong agricultural heritage.

History

Stratford was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Stratford, Connecticut. The town was named after the Connecticut town, and was incorporated in 1876. The first post office was established in 1857.
The town was originally a farming community, and the first settlers were mainly farmers. The town grew slowly, and by the early 1900s, it had become a center for the surrounding agricultural area. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the early 1900s, the town began to experience a period of growth. The railroad arrived in Stratford in 1906, and the town began to grow rapidly. The population increased from just over 500 in 1900 to over 1,000 by 1910.

Stratford is located at 41°45'17" North, 93°45'17" West (41.754722, -93.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Stratford's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of corn, soybeans, and hogs. The town is also home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.2 people per square mile (344.3/km2).
