Stanton Summary

Stanton is a city located in Montgomery County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County.

History

Stanton was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Edwin M. Stanton, the Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln. The first post office was established in 1855.
In 1856, the first school was built in Stanton. The first church was built in 1858. The first newspaper, the Montgomery County Herald, was established in 1859.

In 1864 the first bank was established in Stanton The first railroad line was built in 1868

In 1871, the first telephone line was established in Stanton. The first electric lights were installed in 1891.

Economy

The economy of Stanton is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant.
The city also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile (351.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 391.7 per square mile (151.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
