Slater Summary

Slater is a city located in Story County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ames, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a part of the larger Ames-Boone, Iowa Combined Statistical Area.

History

Slater was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after a railroad official, John F. Slater. The first post office was established in 1882.

Geography

Slater is located at 42°2′17″N 93°37′17″W (42.038125, -93.621390). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Slater is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large farms, as well as a number of smaller family-owned farms. The city also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,811.8 people per square mile (700.2/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 773.5 per square mile (298.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
