Sidney Summary

Sidney is a small city located in Fremont County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the West Nishnabotna River, approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of Council Bluffs. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Sidney was founded in 1854 by settlers from Ohio and Pennsylvania. The town was named after Sidney, Ohio, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1855.
In 1856, the first school was built in Sidney. The first church was built in 1858. The first newspaper, the Sidney Herald, was established in 1867.
In 1871, the Sidney and Pacific Railroad was built, connecting Sidney to Council Bluffs. This allowed for the growth of the town, as it became a shipping point for grain and livestock.

In 1882 the Sidney Opera House was built It was used for plays concerts and other events

In 1883, the Sidney Electric Light and Power Company was established, providing electricity to the town.
