History
Shelby was founded in 1856 by settlers from Ohio and Indiana. The town was named after Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero and the first governor of Kentucky. The first post office was established in 1857.
In 1858, the first school was built in Shelby. The first church was built in 1859. The first newspaper, the Shelby County Herald, was established in 1867.
In 1871, the first bank was established in Shelby. The first railroad line was built in 1872. The first telephone line was established in 1883.

The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
