Roland Summary

Roland, Iowa is a small city located in Story County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the South Skunk River, approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of Ames and 30 miles (48 km) north of Des Moines. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Roland was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Cambridge. The town was named after Roland, a character in the epic poem The Song of Roland. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Roland was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a lumberyard, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and a newspaper.
In the 1950s, Roland began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away to larger cities. The town's population dropped from 1,845 in 1950 to 1,619 in 1960.

Geography

Roland is located at 41°59'17" North, 93°25'45" West (41.9879, -93.4292). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Roland's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 674.2 per square mile (260.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
