History

Rockwell City was founded in 1872 by the Rockwell brothers, who were looking to capitalize on the area's rich agricultural resources. The city was named after the brothers, and the first post office was established in 1873. The city was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Rockwell City was a bustling agricultural center, with a variety of businesses and services. The city was home to a number of grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, a lumber yard, a hotel, a bank, and a variety of other businesses.
In the early 20th century, Rockwell City was a major center for the production of livestock, with a number of large stockyards and livestock markets. The city was also home to a number of manufacturing businesses, including a brickyard, a canning factory, and a furniture factory.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,717 people, 717 households, and 454 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,431.7 people per square mile (553.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
