Rippey Summary

Rippey is a small city located in Greene County, Iowa, United States. The population was 441 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Rippey was founded in 1881 by William Rippey, a local farmer. The town was originally named Rippeyville, but the name was changed to Rippey in 1883. The town was incorporated in 1887.
Rippey was a major stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, which ran through the town from 1881 to 1980. The railroad was a major source of employment for the town, and it also brought in many visitors.

Geography

Rippey is located at 42°14′17″N 94°17′17″W (42.238, -94.288). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.45 square miles (1.17 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Rippey's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 441 people, 181 households, and 119 families residing in the city. The population density was 977.8 people per square mile (378.2/km2). There were 197 housing units at an average density of 437.8 per square mile (169.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 181 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. 32.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
