Pierson Summary

Pierson is a small town located in Woodbury County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Floyd River, approximately 10 miles south of Sioux City. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

The town of Pierson was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the first settler, John Pierson. The town was originally a farming community, but in the late 19th century, it became a center for the lumber industry. The town was incorporated in 1887.
In the early 20th century, Pierson was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, and a creamery. The town also had a school, a post office, and a newspaper.

Geography

Pierson is located at 42°30'25" North, 96°17'45" West (42.506944, -96.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Pierson is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a few restaurants and a grocery store.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 376.7 per square mile (145.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
