Oyens is a small town located in Plymouth County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Floyd River, approximately five miles south of Le Mars. The population of Oyens was estimated to be around 200 in 2020.

Geography

Oyens is located at 42°45'45" North, 96°14'45" West (42.7625, -96.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Oyens was founded in 1881 by a group of Dutch settlers. The town was named after the Dutch city of Oijen, which is located in the province of North Brabant. The first post office in Oyens was established in 1882.
The town was incorporated in 1887. In the early 1900s, Oyens was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a general store, a blacksmith shop, a creamery, a lumber yard, a hotel, and a bank.

Economy

Today, Oyens is a small, rural community. The town is home to a few small businesses, including a convenience store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The town also has a post office and a volunteer fire department.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 200 people, 79 households, and 57 families residing in the town. The population density was 645.2 people per square mile (248.7/km2). There were 83 housing units at an average density of 263.2 per square mile (101.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.50% White, 0.50% Native American, and 1.00% from two or more races.
There were 79 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.5% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 males.
