Onawa Summary
Onawa is a city located in Monona County, Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Monona County and is located along the West Nishnabotna River. The population was 2,719 at the 2010 census.
History
Onawa was founded in 1857 by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the Native American word for "wide awake," which was chosen to reflect the city's spirit of progress. The first post office was established in 1858.
Onawa was incorporated as a city in 1876. The city was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, and the city's economy was largely based on the railroad. In the late 19th century, Onawa was a major shipping point for livestock, grain, and other agricultural products.
Geography
Onawa is located at 42°2′17″N 96°7′17″W (42.038139, -96.121345). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.17 square miles (5.62 km2), all of it land.

Onawa's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural companies, including Monona County Co-op, Onawa Feed & Grain, and Onawa Milling. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Onawa Manufacturing, Onawa Tool & Die, and Onawa Machine Works.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,719 people, 1,093 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,248.2 people per square mile (481.3/km2). There were 1,193 housing units at an average density of 548.2 per square mile (211.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
