Onawa Summary

Onawa is a city located in Monona County, Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Monona County and is located along the West Nishnabotna River. The population was 2,719 at the 2010 census.

History

Onawa was founded in 1857 by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the Native American word for "wide awake," which was chosen to reflect the city's spirit of progress. The first post office was established in 1858.
Onawa was incorporated as a city in 1876. The city was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, and the city's economy was largely based on the railroad. In the late 19th century, Onawa was a major shipping point for livestock, grain, and other agricultural products.

Geography

Onawa is located at 42°2′17″N 96°7′17″W (42.038139, -96.121345). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.17 square miles (5.62 km2), all of it land.

Onawa's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural companies, including Monona County Co-op, Onawa Feed & Grain, and Onawa Milling. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Onawa Manufacturing, Onawa Tool & Die, and Onawa Machine Works.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,719 people, 1,093 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,248.2 people per square mile (481.3/km2).
