Ocheyedan Summary

Ocheyedan is a small town located in Osceola County, Iowa, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Osceola County.

History

The town of Ocheyedan was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from the Netherlands. The town was named after the nearby Ocheyedan River, which was named after a Native American chief. The town was incorporated in 1881.
In the early 1900s, Ocheyedan was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a creamery.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as many of its residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. The town's population dropped from a peak of 845 in 1950 to 517 in 2010.

Geography

Ocheyedan is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 59 and Iowa Highway 9. It is situated in the northwest corner of Osceola County, approximately 10 miles south of the Minnesota border.
