Moville Summary

Moville, Iowa is a small city located in Woodbury County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Big Sioux River, and is part of the Sioux City metropolitan area. The population of Moville was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Moville was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after the Irish town of Moville, County Donegal. The first settlers were mostly of Irish descent, and the town was originally known as “Irishtown”. The first post office was established in 1857, and the town was officially incorporated in 1876.
Moville was a thriving agricultural community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, and a lumber yard. The town also had a number of churches, including Catholic, Methodist, and Presbyterian.
In the early 20th century, Moville was a popular tourist destination. The town was home to several resorts, including the Moville Hotel, which was built in 1891. The hotel was a popular destination for visitors from Sioux City and other nearby towns.

Geography

Moville is located at 42°30′N 96°25′W (42.50, -96.41). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Moville’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a lumber yard. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 672.5 per square mile (259.7/km2).
