History
Moville was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after the Irish town of Moville, County Donegal. The first settlers were mostly of Irish descent, and the town was originally known as “Irishtown”. The first post office was established in 1857, and the town was officially incorporated in 1876.
Moville was a thriving agricultural community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, and a lumber yard. The town also had a number of churches, including Catholic, Methodist, and Presbyterian.
In the early 20th century, Moville was a popular tourist destination. The town was home to several resorts, including the Moville Hotel, which was built in 1891. The hotel was a popular destination for visitors from Sioux City and other nearby towns.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
