Minburn Summary

Minburn is a small city located in Dallas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Minburn was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after Minburn Creek, which was named after a Native American chief. The first post office was established in 1882.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Minburn is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 845 people, 339 households, and 233 families residing in the city. The population density was 938.9 people per square mile (362.3/km2). There were 369 housing units at an average density of 409.4 per square mile (157.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.9% White, 0.1% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 339 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
