Maxwell is a city located in Story County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ames, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Maxwell was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the railroad's president, William Maxwell. The first post office was established in 1882.
