Malvern Summary

Malvern is a city located in Mills County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mills County.

History

Malvern was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Malvern Hill, a Civil War battle site in Virginia. The first post office was established in 1855.
In 1856, the first school was built in Malvern. The first church was built in 1858. The first newspaper, the Malvern Herald, was established in 1859.
In 1867, the first railroad line was built through Malvern. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Malvern is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant.
The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory, a plastics factory, and a metal fabrication plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 667.2 per square mile (258.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.45% White, 0.11% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.11% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races.
