History
Malvern was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Malvern Hill, a Civil War battle site in Virginia. The first post office was established in 1855.
In 1856, the first school was built in Malvern. The first church was built in 1858. The first newspaper, the Malvern Herald, was established in 1859.
In 1867, the first railroad line was built through Malvern. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.

The economy of Malvern is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant.
The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory, a plastics factory, and a metal fabrication plant.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 667.2 per square mile (258.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.45% White, 0.11% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.11% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 18.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
