Madrid, Iowa is a small city located in Boone County, Iowa, United States. The city is situated along the Des Moines River and is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 2,541.

History

Madrid was founded in 1846 by a group of settlers from Madrid, New York. The city was named after the New York town, and the first post office was established in 1851. The city was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Madrid was a major center for coal mining. The city was home to several coal mines, and the coal industry was the main source of employment for the city's residents. The coal industry declined in the early 20th century, and the city's population began to decline as well.

Geography

Madrid is located at 41°45'25" North, 93°45'45" West (41.756944, -93.762500). The city is situated along the Des Moines River, and is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Des Moines.

Economy

Madrid's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including a John Deere plant and a Tyson Foods plant. The city is also home to several agricultural businesses, including a large hog farm.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,541 people, 1,039 households, and 645 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,154.2 people per square mile (446.7/km2). There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 492.2 per square mile (190.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
