Lytton Summary

Lytton is a small city located in Palo Alto County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Emmetsburg Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Lytton was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after Lytton, England, the birthplace of the railroad's president. The first post office was established in 1882.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Lytton is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. There are also several small businesses in the area, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 241 housing units at an average density of 400.0 per square mile (154.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
