History
Luther was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Madrid. The town was named after the Reverend Luther Rice, a Methodist minister who had preached in the area. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Luther was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a bank, and a lumberyard. The town also had a school, a church, and a newspaper.
