Luther Summary

Luther is a small town located in Boone County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Luther was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Madrid. The town was named after the Reverend Luther Rice, a Methodist minister who had preached in the area. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Luther was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a bank, and a lumberyard. The town also had a school, a church, and a newspaper.

Geography

Luther is located at 41°59'17" North, 93°45'45" West (41.9879, -93.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Luther is a small, rural community with a population of 545 people. The town is primarily agricultural, with most of the population employed in farming and related industries. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 370.0 per square mile (142.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
