Lidderdale Summary

Lidderdale is a small city located in Carroll County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Dodge, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Lidderdale was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Lidderdale, Scotland. The town was named after the Scottish town, and the settlers brought with them many of the customs and traditions of their homeland. The first post office was established in 1882, and the town was incorporated in 1883.
The town grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.

Geography

Lidderdale is located at 42°17'17" North, 94°37'45" West (42.288, -94.629). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Lidderdale is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of corn, soybeans, and hogs. In addition, the town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 379.2 per square mile (146.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
