Lakota Summary
Lakota is a small city located in Kossuth County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,039 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Algona Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Lakota was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The town was named after the Lakota Sioux tribe, which had a large presence in the area. The first post office was established in 1882.
The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century, with the arrival of the railroad in 1887. The railroad brought new businesses and industries to the area, including a creamery, a flour mill, and a brickyard.
In the early 20th century, Lakota was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a number of stores, a bank, a hotel, and a movie theater.

Lakota's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a number of businesses related to agriculture, such as feed stores and grain elevators.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,039 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,346.2 people per square mile (520.2/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 600.3 per square mile (232.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females.
