Kiron Summary

Kiron is a small city located in Crawford County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the West Nishnabotna River, approximately 10 miles south of Denison. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Kiron was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad. The town was named after Kiron, a small town in Sweden. The first post office was established in 1882.

Geography

Kiron is located at 42°2′17″N 95°20′17″W (42.038, -95.338). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Kiron is a small rural community with a population of 545 people. The economy is largely based on agriculture, with corn and soybeans being the main crops. There are also several small businesses in the area, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
