Ireton Summary

Ireton is a small city located in Sioux County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Big Sioux River, approximately 10 miles south of Sioux City. The population was 1,068 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Ireton is located at 42°30'25" North, 96°20'45" West (42.506944, -96.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

History

Ireton was founded in 1882 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the railroad's president, William B. Ireton. The first post office was established in 1883.
In the early 1900s, Ireton was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a bank, a hotel, a lumberyard, a creamery, a blacksmith shop, a hardware store, a grocery store, a drug store, a barber shop, a livery stable, a furniture store, a harness shop, a newspaper, and a telephone exchange.

Economy

Ireton's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bar.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,068 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.3/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 513.3 per square mile (197.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
