Ida Grove Summary

Ida Grove is a city located in Ida County, Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Ida County and is located along the West Fork of the Little Sioux River. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census, a decrease from 2,919 in 2000.

History

Ida Grove was founded in 1871 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after Ida Smith, the daughter of the railroad's president. The first post office was established in 1872.
The town was incorporated in 1881 and the first mayor was elected in 1882. The first school was built in 1883 and the first newspaper, the Ida Grove Times, was established in 1884.

Economy

Ida Grove is a small rural community with a strong agricultural base. The main industries in the area are farming, livestock production, and food processing. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,919 people, 1,214 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.7/km2). There were 1,312 housing units at an average density of 590.2 per square mile (228.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.45% White, 0.14% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.90% of the population.
There were 1,214 households, out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,958, and the median income for a family was $41,944. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $20,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
