Hornick Summary

Hornick is a small city located in Woodbury County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Little Sioux River, approximately 10 miles south of Sioux City. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Hornick was founded in 1887 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the Hornick family, who were early settlers in the area. The first post office was established in 1888.
In the early 1900s, Hornick was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a general store, a blacksmith shop, a creamery, a lumberyard, a hotel, a bank, and a newspaper. The town also had a school, churches, and a variety of other businesses.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as the railroad industry declined. The population decreased from a peak of 845 in 1950 to 545 in 2010.

Economy

Hornick's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant.
The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bar.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 241 housing units at an average density of 400.0 per square mile (154.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
