Havelock is a small town located in Appanoose County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Centerville Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Havelock was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The town was named after the British Admiral, Sir Henry Havelock, who was a hero of the Indian Mutiny of 1857. The town was incorporated in 1883.

Havelock is located at 40°45'17" North, 92°45'17" West (40.754722, -92.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Havelock is a small rural town with a population of 545 people. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The town also has a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 152 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 379.2 per square mile (146.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.90% White, 0.18% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.18% Asian, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 28.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.02.
