Glenwood, Iowa is a small city located in Mills County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the east bank of the Missouri River, approximately 30 miles south of Omaha, Nebraska. The population was 5,269 at the 2010 census.

History

Glenwood was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Glenwood Cemetery, which was located near the original settlement. The first post office was established in 1856.
In 1868, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built a line through Glenwood, connecting it to Omaha and Des Moines. This allowed the town to become a major shipping point for agricultural products.
In 1875, the Glenwood Normal School was established. It was the first normal school in the state of Iowa and provided training for teachers. The school closed in 1891.
In 1883, the Glenwood Manufacturing Company was established. It was the first factory in the town and produced agricultural implements.
In 1887, the Glenwood State Bank was established. It was the first bank in the town and provided financial services to the local community.
In 1895, the Glenwood Telephone Company was established. It was the first telephone company in the town and provided telephone service to the local community.
In 1901, the Glenwood Electric Light and Power Company was established. It was the first electric company in the town and provided electricity to the local community.

Glenwood is located at 41°1′45″N 95°45′17″W (41.029167, -95.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

The economy of Glenwood is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several large agricultural companies, including the Glenwood Grain Company, the Glenwood Milling Company, and the Glenwood Feed Company.

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,269 people, 2,093 households, and 1,372 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,250.3 people per square mile (482.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. There were 2,093 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
