Fort Dodge, Iowa is a city located in Webster County, Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Webster County and is located along the Des Moines River. The population of Fort Dodge was 25,206 at the 2010 census, an increase of 1.3% from the 2000 census.
History
Fort Dodge was founded in 1850 as a military post by the United States Army. The fort was named after General Grenville M. Dodge, who was a Union Army officer during the Civil War. The fort was used to protect settlers from Native American attacks. The fort was abandoned in 1853 and the town of Fort Dodge was established in 1854.
The city was incorporated in 1869 and was a major stop on the Chicago and North Western Railway. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, becoming a major center for the livestock industry. The city was also home to several large manufacturing plants, including the Fort Dodge Iron Works, which produced farm implements and other products.

Fort Dodge is located at 42°30'N 94°10'W (42.500, -94.167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

As of the 2010 census, there were 25,206 people, 10,093 households, and 6,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,269.2 people per square mile (876.7/km2). There were 10,945 housing units at an average density of 986.2 per square mile (380.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 10,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,945, and the median income for a family was $42,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $22,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
