History
Fonda was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after Fonda, New York, the hometown of the railroad's president. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Fonda was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a lumberyard, a creamery, a blacksmith shop, a hardware store, a furniture store, a drug store, a barber shop, a livery stable, a harness shop, a meat market, a bakery, a shoe store, a clothing store, a jewelry store, a millinery shop, a newspaper, a telephone exchange, a theater, a pool hall, a bowling alley, a dance hall, a skating rink, a library, a hospital, and a number of churches.
Geography
Fonda is located at 42°45'17" North, 94°25'17" West (42.754722, -94.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Fonda's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bar.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,788.3 people per square mile (689.3/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 790.0 per square mile (305.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
