Essex Summary

Essex, Iowa is a small town located in Page County, Iowa. It is situated on the banks of the East Nishnabotna River, approximately 10 miles south of Clarinda. The town was founded in 1856 and was named after Essex, England. As of the 2010 census, the population of Essex was 545.

Geography

Essex is located at 40°45'25"N 95°2'25"W (40.756944, -95.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Essex is located in the rolling hills of southwestern Iowa. The town is situated on the banks of the East Nishnabotna River, which flows through the town. The town is surrounded by farmland and is located approximately 10 miles south of Clarinda.

History

Essex was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Essex, England. The town was originally known as Essex Station, as it was a stop on the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Essex was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
