Earlham was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Earlham, England. The town was named after the English town, and the first post office was established in 1855. The town was incorporated in 1881.
In the late 19th century, Earlham was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.

Earlham is located at 41°30'25" North, 94°2'25" West (41.506944, -94.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Earlham's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a few manufacturing plants, including a plastics factory and a metal fabrication plant.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races.
