Dexter, Iowa is a small town located in Dallas County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the North Raccoon River, approximately 20 miles west of Des Moines. The population of Dexter was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The town of Dexter was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after the town of Dexter, New York. The first settlers were attracted to the area by the abundance of timber and the availability of land for farming.
The first post office was established in 1855 and the first school was built in 1856. The town was incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Dexter was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard.

Geography

Dexter is located at 41°37'25" North, 94°14'45" West (41.623607, -94.245945). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Dexter is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a bank, and a restaurant.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile.
