History

Dakota City was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from the Dakota Territory. The city was named after the Dakota Territory, which was the name given to the area by the United States government. The city was incorporated in 1858 and was the first city in Humboldt County.
The city was a major stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, which ran through the city from 1883 to 1971. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the city, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people to and from the city.
