In the late 19th century, Cumberland became a popular destination for tourists, due to its scenic beauty and its proximity to the West Nishnabotna River. The town was also home to several businesses, including a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the early 20th century, Cumberland experienced a period of growth, as the town was connected to the railroad. This allowed for the transportation of goods and people, and helped to spur economic growth.
