Charter Oak is a small town located in Crawford County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denison Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Charter Oak was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Charter Oak, a famous tree in Connecticut that was said to have sheltered the colony's charter from the British in 1687. The town was incorporated in 1876.

Geography

Charter Oak is located at 42°2′17″N 95°25′17″W (42.038, -95.421). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Charter Oak is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. There are also several small businesses in the town, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 152 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 379.2 per square mile (146.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.90% White, 0.18% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.18% Asian, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.55% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.4% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.06.
