Cherokee County is located in the northwest corner of Iowa, and is bordered by Plymouth, Sioux, O'Brien, and Buena Vista counties. It is part of the Sioux City, IA-NE-SD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Cherokee, and the largest city is Marcus. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,072.

History

Cherokee County was established in 1851 and was named after the Cherokee Indians who had been removed from the area in the 1830s. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1856. The county was organized in 1858 and the first courthouse was built in 1859.
The county was an important agricultural center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The county was home to several large farms, and the area was known for its production of corn, oats, and hay.

Geography

Cherokee County covers an area of 576 square miles. The terrain is mostly rolling hills, with some flat areas in the north and east. The county is drained by the Little Sioux River and its tributaries. The highest point in the county is located in the northwest corner, at an elevation of 1,619 feet.
The county is home to several state parks and wildlife areas, including Little Sioux Park, Cherokee State Park, and the Cherokee Wildlife Management Area.
