Boyden Summary

Boyden is a city located in Sioux County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sioux City, IA–NE–SD Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Boyden was founded in 1881 by a group of Dutch settlers. The city was named after the Reverend John Boyden, a minister from the Netherlands who had come to the area to preach. The city was incorporated in 1883.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,541 people, 602 households, and 431 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,279.2 people per square mile (493.2/km2). There were 645 housing units at an average density of 537.5 per square mile (207.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 602 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.3% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
