Bayard Summary

Bayard, Iowa is a small city located in the southwestern corner of the state, in the county of Guthrie. History

The area that is now Bayard was first settled in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was originally known as “Raccoon Forks”, and was later renamed “Bayard” in honor of General George Dashiell Bayard, a Civil War hero. The town was officially incorporated in 1881.
In the early 1900s, Bayard was a thriving agricultural community, with a population of over 1,000 people. The town was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a creamery.
