Archer Summary

Archer is a small city located in Clay County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Little Sioux River, approximately 10 miles south of Spencer. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Archer was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The town was named after the Archer family, who were among the first settlers. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Archer was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a general store, a blacksmith shop, a creamery, a lumberyard, a hotel, and a bank. The town also had a school, a church, and a newspaper.
In the 1950s, Archer began to decline as the population shifted to larger cities. The bank closed in the 1960s, and the post office closed in the 1970s.

Geography

Archer is located at 43°7′17″N 95°14′17″W (43.1214, -95.2379). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Archer is a small, rural community with a limited economy. The main industries in the area are agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 241 housing units at an average density of 397.5 per square mile (153.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
