Altoona Summary
Altoona, Iowa is a city located in Polk County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 14,569 at the 2010 census, an increase of more than 100% from the 2000 census.
Geography
Altoona is located at 41°37′N 93°30′W (41.619, -93.500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
History
Altoona was founded in 1876 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the Italian city of Altoona, Pennsylvania. The city was incorporated in 1883.
Economy
Altoona is home to Adventureland, a popular amusement park, and Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. The city is also home to several large employers, including the Altoona Campus of Des Moines Area Community College, the Altoona Campus of Iowa State University, and the Altoona Campus of the University of Iowa.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 14,569 people, 5,845 households, and 3,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,310.7 people per square mile (505.3/km2). There were 6,093 housing units at an average density of 548.3 per square mile (211.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 2.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.7% of the population.
There were 5,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
