Alleman Summary
Alleman is a small city located in Polk County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Alleman was founded in 1881 by a group of Dutch immigrants who had recently arrived in the area. The town was named after one of the immigrants, John Alleman, who had purchased the land from the railroad. The town grew quickly, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural community.
In the early 20th century, Alleman was home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a creamery. The town also had a school, a post office, and a number of churches.
Geography
Alleman is located at 41°37′17″N 93°41′45″W (41.621445, -93.695845). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.86 square miles (2.23 km2), all of it land.

Alleman’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and hay. The town also has a number of businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,139.2 people per square mile (822.3/km2). There were 730 housing units at an average density of 848.8 per square mile (327.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,845. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
